Your Twin and AI at Whoo
Whoo is built around AI: it finds your people, and you do the talking. This page explains each AI feature, what the AI never does, and how you stay in control.
The short version
- AI seats you with people you're likely to click with, helps chats get started and translates between languages.
- The AI never decides a match on its own. A match needs two Yes answers, given by members or, on Auto-Date, by a member's Twin.
- Icebreakers, reply ideas, translations and match reasons are labelled as AI. Twin chats are not labelled one by one: before your first session we tell everyone that, on Whoo Plus, a member's Twin may chat for them. [counsel: whether EU AI Act Art. 50, New York GBL Art. 47 and Korea's AI Basic Act need a label in each Twin chat]
- Your chats are not used to train AI models unless you turn that on.
Each AI feature, in plain words
| Feature | What it does | Plan |
|---|---|---|
| Seating | Chooses who sits at your table for each session, aiming for people you're likely to click with. | Everyone |
| Icebreakers | Opens each 3-minute chat with a question or prompt, so nobody faces a blank screen. | Everyone |
| Reply ideas | Suggests things you could say. Nothing is sent unless you pick it. You can edit it or ignore it. | Everyone |
| Translation | Write in any of 45 languages. The reader sees their own language on top and your original underneath, labelled "AI · Translated from" your language. | Everyone |
| Match reasons | Explains why the two of you might get along. Basic shows one line; Whoo Plus shows the full reasoning. | Everyone (more on Plus) |
| Your Twin | An AI version of you. It starts with a 3-minute chat at sign-up called "Meet your Twin" and helps Whoo understand who you'd like to meet. | Everyone (keeps learning on Plus) |
| Twin Talk | Unlimited chats with your Twin, so it gets to know you better. | Whoo Plus |
| Auto-Date (Auto-Hangout in Friends mode) | When you're away, your Twin can take part in up to 5 three-minute chats a day for you. You review each one in Date Recap (Hangout Recap). | Whoo Plus |
What the AI never does
- It never decides matches. Only Yes and No decide. On Auto-Date, your Twin gives the Yes or No for its own chats, because it's acting as you; that's the only exception.
- It never sends messages for you in live chats, unless your Twin is on Auto-Date. Reply ideas wait for you to choose.
- It never spends unlocks or money. Not even your Twin. You decide every unlock.
- It never writes the first message after a match. That's always you.
- Your Twin is designed to say it's AI if someone asks. [To confirm with engineering]
How AI is labelled
- Icebreakers, reply ideas, translations and match reasons are labelled as AI.
- Twin chats are not labelled one by one: before your first session we tell everyone, in "How Whoo works", that, on Whoo Plus, a member's Twin may chat for them. [counsel: whether EU AI Act Art. 50, New York GBL Art. 47 and Korea's AI Basic Act need a label in each Twin chat]
- Your Twin is designed to say it's AI if someone asks. [To confirm with engineering]
- Translated messages always show the original underneath.
We designed this to meet AI transparency laws such as Article 50 of the EU AI Act. [counsel: confirm scope of California SB 243 and New York GBL Art. 47]
Your Twin
What it is
Your Twin is AI, not a person. It's a model of your tastes and the way you talk, built from what you tell it. It helps Whoo seat you well and, on Whoo Plus, can chat for you on Auto-Date.
What it learns from
- Your "Meet your Twin" chat at sign-up.
- On Whoo Plus: your Twin Talk chats, your own messages in Whoo, and your own Yes and No choices in sessions.
- On Basic, your Twin stays as you set it up. It doesn't keep learning.
What it never learns from
- Other people's messages. Ever.
- Other people's Yes or No.
- Anything outside Whoo, such as your contacts, photos or other apps.
Auto-Date rules
- Up to 5 three-minute chats a day, only while you're away.
- Your Twin may say Yes or No for you, and matches can result.
- It can't buy or use unlocks, spend money, or send the first message after a match.
- You read every chat in Date Recap and decide whether to unlock.
- Your Twin follows the Community guidelines, and you're responsible for it.
When Whoo Plus ends
Your Twin stays and still helps with matches. Auto-Date turns off. Nothing is deleted.
Your controls
- See, edit or delete what your Twin knows, any time, free on every plan.
- Turn Auto-Date on or off whenever you like.
- Ignore reply ideas. They're only suggestions.
- Consents. At sign-up you give separate consent for AI processing in chats and for translation. You can review these in settings. Some features can't work without them.
- Delete your account in the app or on the web. Your Twin is deleted with it.
More detail is in our Privacy Policy and Your privacy choices.
Training AI models: off unless you say yes
A setting called "Help improve Whoo's AI" lets us use your chats to train and improve models. It's off unless you turn it on, and you can turn it off again at any time. Turning it off doesn't change how Whoo works for you.
The AI and translation providers we work with are listed in our Privacy Policy. [Providers to be listed]
AI can get things wrong
- A translation can miss a joke or change a meaning. Check the original underneath if something reads oddly.
- A match reason is a best guess, not a fact about someone.
- Your Twin may say something you wouldn't. Check Date Recap.
- AI is not a counsellor, doctor, lawyer or safety service. Don't rely on it for safety decisions.
If an AI feature gets something wrong or says something harmful, report it from the chat menu, or email safety@meetwhoo.com.
How seating works
EU law (the Digital Services Act) asks us to explain the main signals our recommender uses. Here's how Whoo chooses who sits at your table.
Hard rules, applied first
- Who you're interested in, and who's interested in you, both ways.
- Your mode: Dating or Friends.
- Never someone you've blocked or who has blocked you.
- Not someone you've met in a session in the last 7 days.
- Members must be 18 or over.
Then, signals about who you might click with
- What your Twin knows about you: interests, what you're looking for and how you like to talk.
- Your language. Translation means language is never a hard barrier.
- Your own past Yes and No choices.
- Who is online for that session. The smallest table is 5 people.
Seating never uses photos, because Whoo has none. It doesn't use anyone else's messages to profile you. You can change what your Twin knows at any time, which changes your seating.
